Darktanyon House – Micropolis #211

Friday, 30th April 2021 By Caz

Darktanyon House is the Student Union building for Micropolis University, situated in the heart of the campus.

The bottom two floors house a subsidised bar, social space and Union offices, while the upper levels provide more accommodation for the students in the main block and two angled side wings.

Those students lucky enough to get a room in this hall of residence are never far away from a party!

Minifig Themed Habitats #18

Wednesday, 28th April 2021 By Caz

I’m taking a brief break from my recent Monofigure Habitats series, today I am going to showcase a battle of two bands, and an Urban Biker.

The Boy Band is fronted by out-of-this-world singer Benny, who is accompanied by the Guitar Rocker from the Ninjago Movie CMFs and Alfred, from the LEGO Batman Movie Series 2 CMFs. They love making quite a racket!

The Girl Band on the other hand, pedals a far more melodic brand of pop, and features Wildstyle on guitar, along with Kitty Pop and Candy Rapper from The LEGO Movie 2 CMFs. The trio make sweet music!

And now for something completely different, this shows an urban biker from the City Outdoor People Pack, practising some tricks on a ramp in a derelict part of town.

Pinkerton Estate – Micropolis #210

Monday, 26th April 2021 By Caz

This imposing structure is the Pinkerton Estate, a development of social housing which comprises two linear stepped blocks elevated on pillars above carefully manicured gardens.

Its vibrant coral colour marks it out as a distrinctive landmark within the residential district of town. The Micropolis inhabitants report that the development is a very pleasant place to live.

Monofigure Habitats #4

Friday, 23rd April 2021 By Caz

Installment number four of my Monofigure Habitats project brings us three more colouful characters – The Starlet, The Dapper Gentleman and The Dive Master.

The Bright Pink Starlet was definitely influenced by a certain Batman minifigure wearing a bright pink tutu and cowl. I thought this version needed a lavish dressing room to get ready for her next appearance on the big screen.

The Dark Purple Dapper Gentleman is taking a promenade along the street with his bag slung over his shoulder, and he is also wearing his best coat tails and top hat.

Meanwhile, the Orange Dive Master is loading up his dinghy with diving equipment and is about to set sail from the harbour to explore the deep.

Like the previous trio of Monofigure Habitats, there were designed digitally first in Stud.io, with the parts required being transferred to a BrickLink wish list for each. I extracted what I already had in my collection and then set about acquiring the other bits from various BrickLink sources. Once all the bits were gathered together, I was then able to build the habitat from my digital file quite easily.

The Wave – Micropolis #209

Wednesday, 21st April 2021 By Caz

My latest Micropolis build, called The Wave, is a pair of halls of residence for new students at Micropolis University. Each floor has several rooms set around a communal kitchen an living space, to give the students a welcoming home from home feel.

Originally the two blocks were both facing in the same direction but this made the build look a bit boring, so I turned the larger block through 90 degrees so that its “wave” is crashing in another direction.

The underside of the cantilevered structures have been landscaped to give a sheltered space for outdoor events – and probably a few raucous student parties, no doubt.

Monofigure Habitats #3

Monday, 19th April 2021 By Caz

I have three more Monofigure Habitats to show you today, Ms Green The Mermaid, Mr Medium Nougat The Baker and Mr Yellow, the Pharaoh.

The Mermaid is sitting at the bottom of the ocean surrounded by seaweed, an old ship’s wheel and some bubbles heading for the surface. She’s about to bite into a tasty apple, but I’m not sure where she found that under the water!

The Baker has been busy baking pretzels for his customers. The bakery also features some baguettes, some jars of flour on the shelf and a rather alarming looking spider hoping to gather a few crumbs!

This Pharaoh was obviously very important, because he has been interred in a very ornate pyramid. I got the hidea for this habitat from the excellent headdress piece, and everything else followed from there. The walls are decorated with frescoes but the poor pharaoh appears to be roaming around inside – perhaps he’s on the lookout for grave-robbing archeologists!

My first six Monofigure Habitats were all designed physically first, but as I got further into the project, I decided to use Stuid.io to design the Habitats before ordering the pieces I needed. The programme has the option to just show pieces in one specific colour, which was invaluable for being able to see the more unusual elements which were available to make each model. I’ve been juggling BrickLink wish lists for months now! Some of you asked if you will see more than three habitats stacked together – the answer is yes. But not yet, as I don’t whant to spoil the reveal of the finished project, which ist still in progress!
