A few weeks ago, the London AFOLs held their virtual meetup for the month on the subject of Bionicle – a discontinued LEGO theme, which was around in two waves between 2000-2010 and again from 2015-2017. This is what I was inspired to build.
MORI – Micropolis Block #131
When I was at the Discovery Brick Show recently, LEGO friend Bricks McGee presented me with a pot of random stuff and said “build something Micropolis-y with that!” With the addition of some of my own pieces such as orange 1×2 clips, cheese wedges, SNOT bricks and a random Bionicle weapon (57563 Mahri Matoran Blade), plus some Spongebob porthole windows, I used quite a few of the bits I was given to put together this module, the Micropolis Oceanographic Research Institute – or MORI for short.
Bionicle: Incomplete Kiina Bounty

I’m really not a fan of the Bionicle range. None of them are particularly appealing to me, partly because they all seem to be about warriors and fighting. I’m not into Mech builds in general either, and the Bionicle theme strays a little bit too far from the regular LEGO aesthetic for my taste. However, I realise that there are some potentially interesting parts to be had for other purposes, with a little lateral thinking.
I won this lot on eBay recently – dirt cheap – as it was an incomplete example of set 8987 Kiina from 2011. I like the pale blue colour of some of the pieces and feel they could be used as feature details – architectural greebles, if you will – in future Micropolis builds. I will have to see what can be done with them! Here’s a taster:
